The Pilgrimage by Todd Crawford is both an ode to and a lampoon of the ego in and of artistic creation. This story of "the flirtations held between art and politics" meditates upon the life story of Pierre Armel Bete, a French revolutionary who, through artistic melodrama, transforms not only the face of his country, but the minds behind it.

The Pilgrimage Todd Crawford 9781489580160 Books Reviews
The Pilgrimage, by Todd Crawford, truly stands out amongst many of the current, typical, storylines played out in books today. Granted, I haven't come close to reading the vast majority of novels available, but at times it seems I'm reading the same story over and over again. Mr. Crawford's new piece, The Pilgrimage, was refreshing and prompted within me a curiosity to follow along with the main character, Pierre, despite my initial disdain for him, and to see him through to the end. I know, I loathed Pierre, yet here I am giving the book a five star review and praising the story.... However, eventually I stopped hating the character and instead, understood and empathized with him and what he had been going through all along.
To some, The Pilgrimage may offend or come across as crass, as it's quite "real" and the author does not hold back. There is plenty of cynicism and certainly no sugar coating, or happy endings. Being that I'm an optimist and will always try to find the good in every situation, I found the characters and plotline were a bit too negative and depressing for my tastes, yet because of the way the story itself was told, I felt compelled to finish. And, I'm very glad that I did!
I was in absolute awe with how beautifully Mr. Crawford tells his tale, using seemingly effortless poetic descriptions to bring his story to life. You see, feel, and sense the scene unfolding in front of you, live in the palm of your hand (Or blazing on your computer screen, however you choose to read). My review will not do his style any justice, but know that you will become lost within his words, engaged and emotionally connected to this book. If you haven't read it yet, be sure you do!
